The Big Walk 2017

3rd April 2017

Group Shot Band Stand webVolunteering is the commitment of time and energy, for the benefit of society and the community, the environment, or individuals outside one’s immediate family. It is undertaken freely and without concern for financial gain. Volunteering can give you the opportunity to try something new, gain experience, develop skills, improve your career prospects, build confidence and meet new people. In Rotherham there are nearly 50,000 volunteers who give their time each week to do something for their community or other people, without these volunteers life would be pretty grim for many of us.

In recognition of this valued contribution, the team at Voluntary Action Rotherham and their partners, have been gearing up for “Count Me In”  when the whole month of June is given over to activities and events to celebrate our volunteers and raise the profile of volunteering in Rotherham.  “Count Me In” is Rotherham’s contribution to ‘The Big Celebration’ or National Volunteers’ Week; an annual event from 1-7 June to recognise the fantastic celebration millions of volunteers make across the UK.

There will be a number of events including our “Big Walk” which aims to highlight all the thousands of amazing people in Rotherham who give up their time as volunteers, free of charge, each month to help others and make Rotherham a better place to live, work and play.  The Walk will start at All Saints Square around 13.20pm and involve a lap of the town centre before returning to the square around 40 minutes later. Participants will then enjoy refreshments, cake and an opportunity to network between 2-3pm back at the Minster.  We would like to encourage all volunteers and their supporters to join us.

Julie Adamson – VAR Services Manager said “ You are never too old, or too young, never too busy and everyone has something to offer to volunteering. It is a great way of giving back to your community and gives you the feel good factor that other things often don’t. It is important for us to celebrate the unsung hero’s who give so much to our town, The Big Walk is just a little something to recognise them and say thankyou.”

If you give your time as a local volunteer or your organization or group engages volunteers and you’d like to join us, please get in touch with Alison Thorp on 01709 834462 or Email  It would be great to hear from you!

Deadline for bookings is Friday 2nd June. #volunteerwalk
