Hope The Hedgehog Tours Rotherham
13th June 2024

Introducing Hope The Hedgehog: A giant environmental puppet created by Artful Make It Happen and Andrew Kim of Thingumajig Theatre.

Artful proudly announces the launch of Hope The Hedgehog, an interactive puppet walkabout which is the latest addition to Artful’s array of creative endeavours.

Key partners for this project include Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, who have been working

with communities across Rotherham for the last four years through the natural neighbours project to encourage people to take action for nature. So, a collaboration between the organisations seemed only natural.

Hope, is already engaging with Rotherham’s communities with a team of talented puppeteers and her whimsical appearance. She recently attended Wath Festival on the 4th May to engage with

communities there and ask them what their “Hope for the future” was. The audience feedback was

overwhelmingly positive and only further encouraged Artful’s excitement to bring Hope out again

very soon.

Highlights of Hope’s walkabout include:

 Interactivity: Audiences are invited to become part of the story, interacting with the performers

who carry with them paper leaves and pens, audience members will be asked to write their

‘hope for the future’ on the paper leaf and then add that to the ‘forest of Hope’ on Hope’s back.

 Engaging Performances: Hope and her performers leave a lasting impression on all who see her,

whether that is due to her giant size, incredible design work, or simply the fun and playful nature

she shares with children, she is sure to keep any audience in awe of her.

Kris Mackay, Project Lead says “We’re already in awe of Hope and the impact she’s had on the

children she’s met. She was developed from the ideas which came from Rotherham’s young people

during workshops we delivered last summer and to see her come to life has been a very magical

experience. Young people told us they wanted to take more action for nature and our planet and,

working with the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, we want to use Hope to reach as many

young people as we can to bring joy and make pledges for change.”

Victoria Hilton, Artful’s Creative Director says “We are really excited to bring Hope out of hibernation

after the 10 day masterclass with puppetry legend Andrew Kim. Training and upskilling artists is one of Artful's priorities, giving opportunities for local artists to develop new skills and confidence in their

craft. Hope has not only created an opportunity for artists but also created an opportunity for our

organisation to help bring awareness to endangered species, nature recovery and dramatic decline in Hedgehogs in their natural habitats. We are really excited to take Hope on tour and spread the

important message”

If you want to come see Hope and add your message to the ‘Forest of Hope’ you can see her at:

 Ferham Festival - 17th August

 Rotherham Show - 7th & 8th September

Hope will also be popping up in communties across Rotherham such as Canklow and Kimberworth

and will soon be stepping onto the pitch with Rotherham United Football Club!

Hope will be available to hire for future events in late 2024 and beyond.
