Rotherham Community Dementia Workshops

30th January 2019

Nearly 4000 people have Dementia across Rotherham Borough. There is increasing reliance upon family and friends for support. As a family we have sadly had lots of personal experience of dementia. It is therefore ‘personal’.

With this in mind our company Home Instead Senior Care is now establishing Free Rotherham Community Dementia Workshops. This is part of our commitment to help end social isolation and improve the lives of older local people.

The new events are expertly led by Antoinette our care trainer and are broadly based upon our successful in-house City and Guilds in Dementia which gives staff the knowledge and tools necessary to help them meet the individual needs of each person they support with dementia in order to make a real difference to their lives.

The Workshops are designed for anyone supporting loved ones or friends with dementia. They are friendly, informal, pithy and practical and last just an hour.

They will help anyone who attends understand different behaviours and needs, which will in turn enable them to provide care that builds confidence and self-esteem, encourages engagement, and contributes to physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Those attending should, we believe, experience a reduction in the stress upon them and their families caused by dementia. There should also be a reduction in unplanned GP and hospital admissions. That helps release pressure on the health system and taxpayer funds.

A copy of our free guide for those caring for a loved one ‘Helping Families Cope’ is available to any attendees who would like one. There is also always plenty of time made available for questions and follow up.

We are currently seeking to work with organisations and social groups across the Borough who can help us bring the benefits of the Workshops to the largest possible number of local people. You might be a GP surgery or a retired person’s organisation, a regular coffee morning or women’s group. If you feel it may be helpful in any way please just let either myself or Antoinette know.

We neither have or seek any funding or donations for these events. If you or your group becomes involved and you would like to recognise the support given we would simply suggest a donation to a relevant local charity.

The topics covered include:

  • About Alzheimer’s and other dementias – some background facts and the main symptoms
  • Some common types of dementia explained including those affecting older and younger people
  • The importance of early diagnosis
  • Understanding behaviours and unmet needs
  • Improving communication
  • Practical issues such as driving and planning ahead
  • The benefits of activities including capturing life’s journey
  • Resources for further advice and information.

Importantly we can learn from the experiences of others and use that knowledge but personal details are not discussed and confidentiality is always maintained.

If you would like to attend a Rotherham Community Dementia Workshops or if your organisation or group is interested in hosting one or otherwise engaging in one please contact Antoinette on 01709 837170 or email her on
