Rotherham foodbanks supporting people in need

24th July 2018

Rotherham’s Food for People in Crisis Partnership are continuing to provide support to people in need.

The Food for People in Crisis (FiC) Partnership consists of a number of organisations in the Borough that help people deal with emergency situations by providing them with food, whether it’s a parcel to take home or a cooked meal. Some also provide other types of support in addition to the food. There are assessment and referral processes to ensure that people who need support are able to access help when they need it.

This emergency help is expected to face challenges following the roll out of Universal Credit in Rotherham this month. Statistics release by The Trussell Trust show that foodbanks operating in areas that have been in full Universal Credit rollout have experienced an average increase of 52%, in the 12 months after the full rollout date in their area.

The Rotherham Food for People in Crisis (FiC) Partnership work tirelessly to support people in crisis. Last year approximately 4000 people, including families received a food parcel. The FiC Partnership are supported by a range of organisations, including support from the Rotherham Borough Council and FareShare, Yorkshire.

Although local foodbanks are ‘gearing up’ for the likely increases in need, they are often limited by supplies and resources available to them.

Voluntary Action Rotherham are working together with these frontline providers to find new support in anticipation of the roll out of Universal Credit. The partnership is calling out to businesses and the wider community for ideas and offers of stock, to ensure these vital lifelines are maintained for all or our neighbours in crisis. If you are able to gift ambient food stock within use by date or essential items such as toiletries please email: foodincrisis@varotherham.org.uk to confirm how you can donate.

Voluntary Action Rotherham has set up a dedicated ‘People in Need’ bank account to receive donations. All of the funds raised are granted via small grants which are awarded by an independent panel to improve Food in Crisis organisations’ services to people in need. Throughout the year you can make a donation to the Food in Crisis partnership either by cheque or bank transfer: Cheques should be made payable to ‘People in Need (VAR)’ and sent to Voluntary Action Rotherham, The Spectrum, Coke Hill, Rotherham S60 2HX.

To make a bank transfer, please ask your bank to send your donation to ‘People in Need (VAR)’, account number 20298847, sort code 086001.
