VAR & RUCT Volunteer Project in partnership with local organisations
Dec 25, 2023
Colan Leung, More Than Football Manager, spoke about the partnership between VAR & RUCT Volunteering in partnership with local organisations:
“As part of the EFL week of action we organised a tidy up of our memorial garden due to the floods in November across the UK and in particular Rotherham. Unfortunately our memorial garden at The AESSEAL New York Stadium (which is located next to the River Don) was destroyed and left in a mess so we jumped on board with the #TidyUpOurTown campaign.
I put a call out to volunteers from the local community and businesses and the response we had was amazing. We had representatives from Lloyds Bank, Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, Harsco, Tilbury Douglas, Steelphalt, Code Building Solutions, The Canal & River Trust and participants from Rotherham United Community Trust. All in all, we had 36 volunteers supporting us on the day working with experienced staff from the Canal River Trust to salvage as much as we could and bring it back to life so people within the local community can use it again.
Not only have we done something amazing for the local community and the wider environment we’ve also been looking after our own health. I really am proud of what everyone has achieved, it really has been a team effort and the amount of positive feedback we’ve had from staff, fans and the local community has been fantastic, and we really couldn’t have done it so quickly without everyone’s help.”
Clair Wakefield from HARSCO said:
“Me and six colleagues spent the day volunteering in the communal garden space at Rotherham Football Club maintaining the garden spaces, planting a new wildflower bed, and clearing debris. It was an enjoyable day and a fantastic opportunity to give back to the local community. We are aiming to continue a Partnership with Rotherham Community Trust and Voluntary Action Rotherham.”
