The Big Walk
On the 7th June 2016 we walked for the second time to help thank active volunteers and raise the profile of volunteering in Rotherham as part of a month of activities to celebrate Count Me In 2016. Every year towns and cities across the UK organise events and programmes to mark National Volunteers Week but in Rotherham we like to do things slightly differently and so ‘Count Me In’ was born, with a whole month of activities each and every June including the Big Walk.
The idea of a Volunteer Walk actually came from members of the Rotherham Volunteer Coordinator Network; a group of volunteer managers paid and unpaid who come together to share good practise, troubleshoot and offer peer support. The hope was to join our resources and energies and collaborate as part of Volunteers’ Week rather than each do our own thing.
The first year in 2015 was a big success with more than 120 volunteers and their supporters participating, representing more than 28 different organisations and groups so the pressure was on to do it all again in 2016. Indeed it would seem that the ‘Big Walk’ is fast becoming an annual part of the Rotherham calendar with a date already set for 2017.
