The church community is a covenant relationship between St Columba’s Anglican Church in the Diocese of Sheffield and Stephen Hill Methodist Church in the Sheffield Methodist Circuit.

Both churches are long established churches in a suburban community and they have made a promise together to do worship and mission as one. The churches have been working to develop a close relationship for the past few years and are now one church community, on two sites.

We alternate between the two church buildings on a Sunday and we have activities that run in both buildings each week.

St Columba’s & Stephen Hill’s main values are to:

Children are an important part of the church community. We currently have two Sundays a month with a children’s group called Blast Kids, where there is a mix of children’s worship and Godly Play, and Outdoor church on a Sunday during the spring and summer months.

On the first Sunday in the month we have our “All Together” service where we worship together as a church family, and we encourage the young people to get involved in the service. Numbers at Sunday services currently vary from no children to 8 – 10 children of ages 2-14.

We have several initiatives that bring us into contact with families and young people every week, including Family Fun Friday and weekly school assemblies and clubs.

Currently we employ a part-time Children & Families Worker but wish to increase our Sunday ministry and work with young people. We also have future plans to start a new Café Church for families. To succeed in this, we want to grow our team.

With this is mind, this exciting new role is a great opportunity to help us grow in our provision and develop new ministries with children and their families. We’re particularly looking for someone with a heart for youth and families’ ministry who can work alongside our existing Children & Families’ Worker and help to grow and shape our work within a supportive church
community.

Employment Details:
• The post is part time and covers 25 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work, including regular Sunday work, will be required.
• The post is employed locally by the parish of St Columba’s in Crosspool working in partnership with the Centenary Project, an initiative of the Diocese of Sheffield.

What is the Centenary Project?
The Centenary Project was set up to equip local churches, enabling them to effectively engage,
nurture and disciple a new generation of children, young people and families.

The Centenary Project supports parishes and their workers to be missional in their activities, so
that many more people connect with our churches, especially children and young people.

How does the Centenary Project Work?
• Over the last 15 years, the trend has been that youth workers and children’s workers leave their jobs for a number of reasons;
• Lack of objectives - unclear what their role is.
• Poor line management - incumbents unskilled in managing staff and volunteers.
• Too inward looking - not enough mission-focus.
• Overworked and underpaid - feeling unappreciated and unvalued.
• No support or network to draw on.
• Money runs out - post not sustainable.

The Centenary Project is tackling all of these issues head on, and seeing workers commit for the long-term, happy in their work, feeling supported and encouraged by the network, seeing a future in youth or children’s ministry and feeling secure in their roles.

How are Centenary Project Workers supported?

Support for workers is essential. The help, guidance and encouragement that’s continually provided to Centenary Project workers is having a huge impact on the success of youth and children’s ministry across the Diocese.

The Centenary Project works with parishes, incumbents, the Diocese and other workers and team members to provide each of the following areas of support and opportunities for ongoing growth.
