Every year as part of National Volunteers Week, Voluntary Action Rotherham host a volunteer celebration event. And this year there was a south American twist with a couple of special guests.
At yesterday’s celebration event we were joined by volunteers and dignitaries from across Rotherham. It was a chance to hear what volunteering means to people and to celebrate all things volunteering. There was a real buzz throughout the event with people sharing stories and experiences.
The stars of the show were undoubtedly Alan and Lenny the alpacas who greeted attendees, looked awesome in their bow ties and flowery garlands posing for selfies with anyone who wanted one – see the gallery below for all the best images from the event.
The power of volunteering was on show and we were treated to some inspirational speeches from volunteers and organisations in Rotherham. A huge thank you to Paula and Zidane from Baby Care Reach for sharing their journeys. Thank you also to Councillor Sarah Allen, Cabinet Member for Communities, who brought the context of volunteering in the borough to life. And thank you to June, for sharing your volunteering experience with us.
I've met so many lovely people through volunteering and would be lost without Crossroads Care. Volunteering is something I absolutely love. June
Another huge part of the event was attendees getting to try a range of activities provided by some of the organisations we work with. Thank you to Rotherham Minster, Baby Care Reach, RMBC Libraries Service, The Learning Community and B Friend for your time to come along and run these activities.
Finally, VAR would like to thank everyone who made this celebration event possible. Lindsay Nicholson, Nicole Cannon, Sue Butler, VAR staff and Muqddas and James from Thomas Rotherham College who all helped to organise the event. Rotherham Minster for hosting at their venue and partnering with us for the last 10+ years. Rotherham Together Partnership and RMBC. Melanie Holt and Jayne Harris from Brown and Brown who volunteered on the day. Sponsors of the raffle prizes; Doncaster Corn Exchange, Boulton Family Butchers, Wentworth Woodhouse, Support Dogs. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue for paying for the celebration cake. Tickhill Alpacas for bringing Alan and Lenny.
Last but definitely not least, thank you to all of our partner organisations and volunteers who support us.
